Future-proof visualization: What really matters in operations
The right display technology is not decided in the showroom
In control centers, the video wall is not a decorative element. It is part of the daily working environment and must present information in a way that allows teams to quickly grasp what is relevant – even under time pressure.Whether a solution is suitable for this is not determined by resolution, size, or pixel pitch alone.
What matters is how it behaves in operation. Is information legible from all relevant positions? Does the situational picture remain available in the event of a failure? Can components be serviced without unnecessarily disrupting operations?
In my view, these are exactly the questions that should come first.
Requirements arise from usage
The selection of a visualization therefore does not begin with the question: LCD or LED? It begins with the task.
What information must be visible simultaneously? How far away are employees sitting from the video wall? Which content changes continuously? Which roles work with the same situational picture? Only from these requirements do technical parameters such as screen area, pixel pitch, brightness, or viewing angle emerge.
This sounds self-evident, but it is frequently underestimated in projects. After all, a technically very powerful solution is of little use if it does not fit the space, the way of working, and the information needs.
LCD and LED solve different tasks
Professional LCD solutions can make sense when content must be read in detail from a short distance. With larger video walls, frames, reflections, panel replacement, and long-term image homogeneity also come into play.
Direct View LED offers other advantages: seamless image surfaces, flexible formats, and great scalability. Here too, however, pixel pitch alone is not what decides. Substructure, image processing, calibration, the spare parts concept, and maintenance access influence operations over many years.
That is why, in my view, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all answer to the question of LCD or LED. The right solution depends on what is to be displayed, how the space is used, and what requirements exist for availability and maintenance.
The purchase price is only part of the decision
Especially with large visualization solutions, the acquisition price naturally plays a role. For long-term operation, however, it is only part of the equation.
At least as important are:
- Effort for planning and integration
- Energy consumption and cooling
- Service and maintenance
- Spare parts availability
- Repairability
- Potential downtime
- Expandability over the entire life cycle
A cheap entry point can become expensive later if maintenance is laborious, spare parts are missing, or a small expansion requires a major rebuild. That is why Total Cost of Ownership should not be considered only after the technical selection. In my view, it belongs in the planning from the very beginning.
Visualization is part of the entire control center architecture
A video wall never works in isolation. Signal paths, image processing, control, sources, fallback levels, and service processes are just as much a part of it as the display itself.
That is why the visualization should always be planned in connection with the entire control center. A good display is of little help if signal paths are not sufficiently redundant or maintenance work unnecessarily disrupts ongoing operations. Conversely, a well-thought-out overall architecture can also function very reliably with a less spectacular display solution.
The life cycle decides the quality of the solution
Whether a visualization was truly well planned often only becomes apparent years after commissioning.
Then questions arise such as:
- How long are spare parts available?
- Can individual components be replaced during ongoing operations?
- Are power supply, signal paths, and image processing sufficiently redundant?
- How is consistent image quality ensured in the long term?
- Can the solution be expanded without rebuilding the entire video wall?
These points quickly seem secondary during initial planning. In later operation, however, they can be decisive. That is exactly why the life cycle should be considered from the very beginning.
The best solution is the one that fits operations in the long term
For me, therefore, what matters is not which display technology is most powerful on paper.
What matters is which solution reliably meets the control center's requirements in day-to-day operations and can still be sensibly operated, maintained, and expanded after years.
Conclusion: A good visualization does not only convince at commissioning. It must prove itself in daily operations and across the entire life cycle.
